Indoor Athletics

On the track pupils will participate in the following events:

  • Obstacle Relay
  • 2 Lap Relay
  • 4 Lap Relay
  • 6 Lap Relay
  • 8 Lap Relay
  • 4 X 2 Lap Relay

In the field pupils will participate in the following events:

  • Shot
  • Speed Bounce
  • Standing Long Jump
  • Standing Triple Jump
  • Vertical Jump
  • Foam Javelin


In this double unit of work pupils develop both a gymnastics and dance sequence/motif. Gymnastics starts with simple conditioning shapes such as tuck, pike, straddle pike, front support, dish, arch, shoulder stand and straight shape. Pupils then link these gymnastic shapes such roles, jumps, leaps and stepping actions. Sequences are first attempted on the floor then as confidence and ability increase pupils can transfer and adapt their sequence to apparatus such as bench, box, vault and beam. Pupils look at canon and unison, symmetry, asymmetry, matching and mirroring in partner work.

Invasion Games

In this double unit of work pupils develop skills in the different invasion games which can include netball, football, hockey and rugby. Pupils develop the basic skills of control, passing, shooting and the basic principles of attack and defence.

Pupils also develop the main fitness components to be effective in the different games such as stamina, speed, strength and agility.

Pupils develop skills in both practice, competitive and match situations.

Fitness – Couch to 5K Live Well NHS Initiative

In this unit pupils are encouraged to build up their general physical fitness focusing mainly on developing the length of time a pupils can run for without getting fatigued. Pupils start with a combination of running and walking and gradually build up the length of time they run for. The terrain is also constantly changed so that pupils develop the ability to run on different surfaces including up and downhill sections.

During this unit pupils develop an understanding of the human body during exercise, looking at the immediate effects of exercise and the long-term benefits.


Basketball is taught as a discrete unit in the sports hall and the skills taught include dribbling, ball control, passing, shooting (set shot and lay up) and the principle of offence and defence. Pupils work on skills in both practice and competitive situations. Most games will be played using the half-court rules and as pupils develop man-to-man will also be covered when looking at defensive tactics.


In badminton lessons pupils are first taught to have a cooperative rally over the net. This is developed into a competitive rally through the learning of the serve, overhead clear and net shots. In addition to the skills of badminton, pupils are taught about singles and doubles tactics and also the signals used by badminton officials.

Striking and Fielding Games

Once the summer term begins the pupils start to develop their skills in rounders, softball and cricket. Pupils look to develop skills in both the fielding positions and as the batting team. As pupils’ skill levels develop they look at the tactics and strategies used in the striking and fielding games.


Pupils begin preparing for the Schools Sports Day in the summer term looking at all the track and field events competed in on the day. Pupils get taught the correct technique and pacing for the different track events from the sprints through to the middle distance events.

Technique is developing in the field events of shot, javelin and long jump.

Table Tennis

Pupils look at the forehand and backhand serve, the push shot and the lob and smash in both single and double games.


Students have a really enjoyed the introduction of handball into the curriculum. Pupils learn how to pass and shoot with a specialised handball. Pupils also develop tactical knowledge of zonal defence and man to man marking.

The Elton High School
