The Mathematics Department seeks to inspire pupils to gain an appreciation of the importance and relevance of Mathematics, as well as to excel academically.
Every student at The Elton High School studies Mathematics as it is a core subject in the National Curriculum. All students are set on ability. In Year 7 we analyse Key stage 2 assessments that students sit in Year 6. From this data each student is put into the correct set for their ability. We are confident that the setting is accurate, but if, throughout the year, a student is flourishing or indeed found not be in the correct set we will adapt this to meet the needs of the students. In Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 students are set on their assessments and progress they have achieved in their previous year.
All pupils are encouraged to achieve their full potential at all levels by both the teaching that takes place in lessons and the extra support provided at lunchtime and after school.
All students study Mathematics for 4 hours each week.
Pupils receive regular feedback from teachers and peers, both verbal and written. Pupils are regularly assessed with end of topic assessments throughout the course. Pupils are encouraged to self-assess and peer assess their work during their lessons and this is then used to inform future planning.
Students sit an assessment at the end of every half term. A revision list will be issued to help guide the student’s revision. These assessments will be marked by the classroom teacher. From this a GCSE grade will be given. This grade will represent, on average, the level they are working at in Mathematics.
The Mathematics Department subscribe annually to the http://www.mathswatch.co.uk web site. The website can be accessed through the school login and password. Each pupil has their own user ID and password. Pupils can find video tutorials of all subjects covered in class and can complete homework set. The website marks their work instantly.
Key Stage 3
Mathematics contributes to the school curriculum at Key Stage 3 by developing pupils’ abilities to calculate; to reason logically, algebraically, and geometrically; to solve problems and to handle data. Mathematics is important for pupils in many other areas of study, particularly Science, Geography and Technology. Mathematics at Key Stage 3 presents frequent opportunities for creativity. Through the Mathematics taught at The Elton High School throughout Key Stage 3 we aim to enable pupils to build a secure framework of mathematical reasoning, which they can use and apply with confidence throughout the rest of their lives.
