Year 7
Module 1: Food Technology – Food and Nutrition
Hygiene and safety, equipment and healthy eating will be the key topics for year 7.
Some of the dishes in Year 7 are fruit salad, pasta salad and a design and make activity for a seasonal salad pot.
Module 2: Graphics – Dynamic pop-up greetings card
Pupils design then manufacture a greetings card that is dynamic and inside includes a mechanism. They study corporate identity and understand the importance of manufacturing quality graphical products. Pupils are encouraged to be creative and complete self/peer assessments of each other’s work.
Module 3: Resistant Materials – Key rack
Pupils design then manufacture a key rack that is made from softwood. They study different families of wood and how wood is joined and finished. Also the pupils study the tools/equipment used in the manufacture of wooden products. Pupils are encouraged to be creative and complete self and peer assessment of their design and practical work.
Module 4: Systems electronics
Pupils manufacture a picture frame and a minion light that both contain an electronic circuit and additionally involve working with different types of wood. They study theory related to electronic principles and control. Pupils complete self/peer assessment of their work.
Year 8
The pupils follow a carousel system during Year 8 and complete 4 modules of work which last between 8 and 9 weeks.
The modules include the following disciplines:
Module 1: Food Technology – Food and Nutrition 2
The focus for year 8 will be baked products and developing practical skills. Some of the dishes in Year 8 are fruit crumble, scones, tomato and basil flan, bread based pizza and muffins.
Modules 2: Systems & Control/Graphics – Moisture sensor
Pupils design then manufacture a moisture sensor and package it in a card box. They study different types of Systems and theory relating to control systems. The pupils complete the process of soldering and study different electrical components. The graphical element of the module contains the production of a storage box from a card net which is enhanced graphical by the pupils. The pupils complete self/peer assessments of their work.

Module 3: Resistant Materials – Acrylic clock
Pupils design then manufacture a clock that is made from acrylic. They study different families of plastics and how plastic is finished and processed using vacuum forming/injection moulding. Also the pupils study the tools/equipment used in the manufacture of plastic products. Pupils are encouraged to be creative and complete self and peer assessments of their design and practical work.
Module 4: Resistant Materials – Metalwork & metal forming
Pupils work from standard drawings to manufacture an aluminium key fob and a steel hanging basket bracket. They study different types of metals and theory relating to sustainability. Also the pupils study the different types of tools, equipment, joining methods and surface finishes associated with metals. Pupils complete self/peer assessments of their work.
Year 9
The pupils follow a carousel system during Year 9 and complete 4 modules of work which last between 8 and 9 weeks.
The modules include the following disciplines:
Module 1: Food Technology – Food and Nutrition 3
The focus for year 9 is cake making, this leads on to a celebration cake design and make activity. Work on food safety is also an important aspect of the course this year. Some of the dishes in year 9 are a tray bake, a celebration cake and a spaghetti bolognese.
Module 2: Resistant Materials – Design and make a Gadget holder
Pupils design then manufacture a gadget holder that is made from a combination of the resistant materials of wood, metal and plastic. They recap on the theory relating to types, joining and finishes studied on these materials in Years 7 and 8. Pupils are encouraged to be creative and complete self and peer assessments of their design and practical work.
Modules 3: Resistant Materials – Focused practical tasks using CAD/CAM
Pupils work from standard drawings to utilise CAD/CAM equipment to manufacture an acrylic book mark, plywood and steel house sign and an acrylic pen/pencil tidy. They study in depth tools and equipment used in the workshop environment. Also the pupils operate the CAD/CAM machine tools, buffing and the line bending machines. Pupils complete self/peer assessments of their work.
Module 4: Systems & Control/Graphics – Automata produced from card
Pupils design then manufacture different automata form card. They study different types of systems and theory relating to mechanical control systems. The pupils complete complex net constructions to assemble their final products. The pupils complete self/peer assessments of their work.
